2023 Call for Artists
2023 Call for Artists
The Artists of the Bluff, LLC (AofB) was formed in 2018 to meet our Palmetto Bluff resident artists’ desire to create and showcase their fine art “at home.” Managed by Karen Dale, Chappy Bailey and Nancy Dwight, AofB annually puts on two outdoor gallery shows where residents can come and enjoy our creative expressions and purchase fine art.
We are now showing in Wilson Village and working closely with The Arts Initiative at Palmetto Bluff as it brings the exciting mixture of southeastern art and artists to our community’s residents, neighbors and guests. Our shows continue to benefit the Palmetto Bluff Conservancy along with other notable local charities through The Arts Initiative.
We represent four disciplines in the field of fine art – Painting, Photography, Pottery and Jewelry - and invite all resident artists who are working in these areas to apply for membership. We are a private organization and limit our annual enrollment to 25 artists. Admittance is on a space available basis. Our application and enrollment period runs from mid- December to mid-January and consists of an application and supporting material. Only current property owners may apply (vertical family are not eligible). Decisions are rendered by a seven person panel that considers the application, images of an artist’s work, and the artist’s record, talent and enthusiasm for their field. An in-person conversation with several panel members is also part of the application process.
We are an “all for one and one for all” operation where collegiality, mutual respect and support for fellow artists and staff are both prized and required. We support our mutual successes because it brings resources to our community and joy to our group. It’s a journey we travel together.
We welcome qualified applications from artists working in these four mediums:
• Painting: Oil, watercolor, acrylic, mixed media, pen and ink/charcoal, pastel, and gouache on canvas or a related substrate. Gallery level framing for framed items is required.
• Photography: Image quality suitable for printing on different media: paper, metal or canvas. High resolution, capable to scale images to large dimensions. Color, clarity and composition appropriate to the image. Gallery level framing for framed items is required.
• Pottery: Kiln fired clay items - the principal material is earthenware, stoneware or porcelain. Other non-clay materials may be added as minor embellishments.
• Jewelry: Distinctive and valuable works made with precious and semi-precious stones, pearls or beads; sterling silver, gold, gold-filled and other quality metals with quality closures are desired.
2023:
We will host two one-day shows in 2023 and artists are expected to exhibit in both:
• Saturday, April 15, Artists of the Bluff Spring Show in Wilson Village
• Saturday, November 11, Artists of the Bluff Autumn Show in Wilson Village
In addition to the shows, artists will have the opportunity to rotate through FLOW Gallery + Workshop on a quarterly basis throughout the year; frequency is dependent on the discipline and available space in the gallery. Our calendar year runs from February 1, 2023, to January 31, 2024.
Upon acceptance, applicants will pay an annual fee of $100 and show fees of $25 per show. Our volunteer management dedicates these funds to marketing, display and overhead necessities such as insurance and compliance. Artists are required to sign and submit two agreements – one to the Artists of the Bluff and one to FLOW Gallery + Workshop. 10% of artist sales at the Spring and Autumn show will be donated to the Palmetto Bluff Conservancy.
Application Process:
Artists interested in joining the Artists of the Bluff are required to download and fill out the application form and submit it to Karen Dale with 3-5 digital images of current work. This should be received no later than January 4th, 2023. The panel will review the submissions and final offers will be made by January 23rd, 2023.
Thank you for your interest and we hope to hear from you soon. Questions can be directed to Karen Dale at karenwdale@gmail.com.
Sincerely,
Karen Dale
